The Fluffy Little Things || Kaede - Cassian McCormick - 10-16-2025

By the Puffskeins,
Around 1PM

Without question, Cassian had taken nose plugs before entering the puffskein pen. Call him what you'd like, but the boy preferred not having any of the creatures trying to stick their tongues up his nose for the grave crime of wanting to get a closer look at them. It had already happened to him once while completing a detention in the paddocks. It had been the most intrusive and unpleasant greeting he'd ever gotten from a creature. Just the memory was enough to make him shudder.

Generally, Cass wasn't the sort to hang around the paddocks and preferred to spend his time on stages rather than barns, but already at the carnival, there was no reason not to have a look for himself.

Besides, Kaede had wanted some company while she saw the creatures, and his ever-gracious girlfrind had volunteered him for the task. Even in the absence of truly dangerous or concerning creatures, the blue-eyed blonde was adamant she was better off being literally anywhere else.

He didn't mind, though. If his friend wanted a closer look for her latest drawing, it wouldn't cost him anything to accompany her.

"You sure you don't wanna try feeding them?" Cass asked, holding out his palm with a few of the treats he'd snatched when they entered. "Might get them to sit still for longer, help you capture the details."

As if to prove his point, one of the fluffy little guys rolled over. It came to a stop before the two, big, adorable eyes focused on the treats in Cass's hand.

"See? This one already likes us."

Or, he supposed, the treats they could offer. Same thing, really.

Something that almost looked like a smile had curled her lips the moment Rosalie had volunteered Cassian to be the one to accompany her to take a closer look at the animals.

Putting her long hair up in a ponytail, not a single strand of hair escaping to her forehead, she followed the boy’s example and reached for a nose plug, her expression telling little to nothing as she did.

She graciously followed him down the trail, the ponytail swinging on her back. As the view of the little, puffy creatures, something glimmered in her eyes, dark as charcoal.

Nodding, she grabbed one of the treats from Cass’ hand, squatting over the gentle creature. Offering a small hand to him, the treat resting on her palm, she waited.

Kaede was used to this—to animals liking her.

Maybe they appreciated the calm way in which she moved—maybe they noticed she was balanced. Either way, they never seemed to dislike her, or even fear her.

Nor that she would ever brag about it. Kaede never really bragged about anything.

“Come,” she called Cassian in a soft voice, as to not scare the small animal, which was already feeding off her hand.

That was the spirit.

Cassian happily placed a few of the treats into the Kaede's hands, pleased at how quickly the creature was warming up to her. It wasn't something he'd have ever noticed before, not with how infrequently he visited the creatures or spent time with her by the paddocks but the Ravenclaw was realising that the girl actually had a way with the animals. It was evident in the earnest way the puffskein scooted over to her. Never one for casting human qualities onto beasts that lacked the cacpacity to feel the same, Cass still had to admit, it looked pretty smitten.

Another rolled over, realising there were treats to be had. It barrelled softly into the first, moving it by only an inch or so before itself coming to a complete stop with wide eyes full of anticipation.

"You're making friends fast," he quipped, straightening to have a look at the colourful balls of fluff. One of them had the exact shade of pink he was sure Ruth would love. It was a wonder the girl wasn't already over here gushing at the more adorable creatures. Then again, she was probably being a more responsible prefect by sticking to the area she'd been assigned.

Cassian was...on break.

The boy had heard and seen enough of professor's being splashed for the last hour or so and thought stretching his legs would be just the solution. Running into Rosie with her request, he couldn't possibly head back, not yet anyway.

“Come.”

He rested his hands lightly in his pocket, watching the girl and her newest fans. "We going somewhere?"

Maybe she wasn't the sort for the fluffy ones. Despite being friends, there were stil many things that remained a mystery to the boy where she was concerned. Rosie had the better read on the girl and had offered him assurances enough for him to not worry. All that was left was his own brand of Ravenclaw curiosity.

He liked to learn about his friends.

“They’re not my friends, I’m feeding them,” she quietly clarified, Cassian’s joke flying over her head.

She looked back down, following the movements of the small creatures, her eyes glimmering with curiosity. They barely showed emotion—yet it was somehow much more than she normally let everyone else see.

Trying to fixate on every detail—the way their fluff made them look like small floating clouds, and how their little dark eyes kind of resembled her own—she narrowed her gaze.

“No.”

She could’ve explained herself further, still she didn’t feel like doing so. Instead, she just waited for Cassian to move right beside her.

Kaede had already decided, she would draw them exactly as she saw them—as colorfoul clouds. She’d never been one for realism, anyways.

“I like this place, it’s quiet.”

“They’re not my friends, I’m feeding them.”

He had to cough to keep from laughing. Moments like these reminded the boy that despite Rosie's many insistences on Kaede's normalcy, their friend certainly...had her quirks. "You'll hurt their feelings if you keep that up," he said, poking her gently in the side as he finally came to a stop by her. "Here they are offering you their wide-eyed allegiance, and you've reduced this moment to food." Cassian patted the one with bright pink fur on the head, leaning in as if he meant to share a secret with the creature that would gladly go digging for gold inside his nostrils had he not chosen to be so careful.

"Don't worry, buddy. She only pretends to be that way. Heart of gold that one. Maybe," he confided in a loud whisper that made it nothing like a secret at all.

“I like this place, it’s quiet.”

"Then we'll hang around here for a while longer. The dunk tank will be fine without me for a little more, I reckon. It's the place with the most professors in this whole place."

He offered up another treat, amused when a third puffskein rolled into the mix. It was a shame Rosie wasn't there to see. He knew she wasn't much for the creatures, but these were the adorable sort. He bet if he'd gotten her a plushie of the same, there'd be no protest. These were no different--well...only a little different. The boy supposed the stuffed toy wouldn't be trying to violate the sanctity of his girlfriend's nose.

Cassian crouched to be closer to their level, chuckling at how eagerly they crowded until one's tongue shot out, causing him to stumble back onto his bum.

It had been too good to be true, clearly.

"Planning to draw them on the spot, or will you remember enough by the time you get back to your common room?" The afternoon was still pretty young. It would be a while before she was back inside unless she decided not to enjoy the rest.

Reclusive as she could be, that wouldn't be too far-fetched.
