Dinner was over. She should be upstairs studying, maybe a shower, sleeping, maybe some tea to calm her nerves or… anything other than what she was currently doing. Instead, she found herself standing outside the kitchens with crossed arms and the growing realization that she had done this to herself.

Crap

“You could still leave it,” she said under her breath. “Just hand it to an elf and disappear. The elves would love it. I’d be their favorite for sure. No big deal right?”

The painting of the bowl of fruit did not answer. Unfortunately. With a dramatic sigh, she tickled the pear and stepped inside.

The kitchen was alive with activity. Elves running too and fro, cleaning, doing dishes, scurrying around faster than she could follow. A high, reedy voice caught her attention. “Tilly is back! Cake is safe. Toddles guarded it from giant hungry Hufflepuffs.”

Matilda laughed at the elf, “That feels oddly specific, thanks Toddles.” Toddles only smiled and tugged her to a corner where the cake was ready. The cake sat proudly on the counter inside a white box, wrapped with a simple string of twine, after cooling for the last twenty four hours. Far too much effort for someone she technically barely knew.

Correction. Someone related to someone she absolutely, definitely, one hundred percent was not falling for. Nope. Not happening. Not even a little.

“Merlin,” she whispered, staring at it. “This is insane.”

A normal person would have bought sweets. A sane person would have written a card. Matilda Nordstrom had apparently decided to celebrate her future-not-future-maybe-fiancé’s younger brother with skilled baking. Wonderful.

Lifting the box, she balanced the package carefully like she was holding a bomb. Which wasn’t too far from the truth.

Climbing the castle stairs to Gryffindor tower took forever. Weird looks directed her way from nosey students. She nearly turned around. Twice, but then found herself standing in front of the Fat Lady portrait who looked more than a little miffed when Matilda didn’t come right out with the password.

What if Serik hated it? What if she messed up and used salt instead of sugar? What if Drago thought this was super weird? Even worse, what if Drago thought this was sweet?

Ugh, that thought nearly sent her back to the kitchens, but ultimately she said the password and walked through the common room door. The room was filled with chatter and laughter, small groups sitting with each other, studying, playing chess or just talking.

And there they were. Definitely brothers, and impossible to miss with their broad shoulders, extra height and annoying good looks.

Drago sat with Serik nearby, and the second Matilda spotted them, every ounce of confidence evaporated. Wonderful. Fantastic. Brilliant idea, Tilly.

Clutching the box tighter, she crossed the room before she could lose her nerve.
Stopping in front of them, cheeks already warmer than she’d like, she cleared her throat.

“Hi,” she started.

Without giving herself time to rethink, she carefully lowered the cake box toward Serik. “I, um…” Her confidence abandoning ship entirely. “Drago mentioned it was your birthday and I made you a cake.”

A pause.

Her eyes narrowed slightly in warning. “And before anyone says anything, this is a perfectly normal thing. Don’t make it weird.”

When it came to school, Tilly liked most things, except classes. Which was unfortunate since classes were a large part of the school experience. Her grades were good, but nothing that would win her awards. Unless they were talking about Herbology, in which case she would be a better teacher than their current waste of space.

The current bane of her existence was Transfiguration. Not one of her best subjects. The homework was pretty straight forward, answering questions on some reading they were assigned, then a short essay summarizing the material.

Looking over the questions, Tilly read through the pages, flipping back and forth, letting annoyed little noises escape as she searched.

She had taken over a small couch in the common room, glaring at anyone who tried to sit near her and talk. There were other areas in the common room they could go, this little alcove was hers. It was later in the evening, nearing 9:30pm, a yawn escaped as her eyes closed and watered with how tired she was, but she needed to get the assignment done.

It was assigned a week ago and due in the morning, so there had been time, but every second of her free time was taken up with the Greenhouse, the Library, the Hospital Wing, Prefect duties or the occasional getting to know you session with Drago. She had stopped avoiding him, it was useless. No matter where she hid, he found her.

Persistent bastard.

It had taken some time, but more of the real Matilda was coming out in his presence. She didn’t worry so much about appearances or what he might think when she showed her true personality. She laughed more, smiled a lot and even made a batch of her chocolate chip cookies for him to try. Not JUST for him, she made them for all her friends, it just so happened that she found him first when they were still warm.

Another yawn escaped, Tilly rested her head on the back of the couch, shutting her eyes briefly. All she had left was a few questions and the three paragraph summary.

Before sitting down to study, she had changed from her typical uniform to a more comfortable outfit. She wore a pair of red plaid flannel sleep pants, typically worn by men. She didn’t care, they were fantastic when it was cold out. With it, she wore soft wool socks and an oversized ivory sweater that had slipped slightly, showing off just a bit of shoulder. Her hair was in a long lose braid, hanging over one shoulder. The picture of casual.

Being cozy was mandatory after a long day. Opening her eyes, with another yawn, she covered her mouth with the hand not holding her quill, then tried to focus her eyes on the page again.

The noise in the main portion of the common room was quieting down, which should have meant she heard the steps of the person walking up behind her, but she didn’t realize he was there until he spoke. Which caused her to jump and yelp with surprise.

“OH MY GOD!” She said, clutching her heart. “I need to get you a bell so I can hear when you're coming.”

It had been almost a week since the opening feast and the revelation from the new 7th year boy. That had been a rather surprising Opening Feast, and of course that had led to at least a week of endless babble and over the top wedding conversations. Tulip had of course been somewhat dragged into party discussions, and dress types (what 16 year old girl wouldn't be) but had drawn the line at joining in with making a wedding planning scrap book. Tulip found the idea of marriage hard, just the thought of having to spend your life with a person seemed ridiculous to her. She struggled to tolerate most people for even the shortest amount of time. She supposed if she had someone who had a shared connection it might be different, but being stuck with someone she hardly knew forever was akin to a punishment in her eyes. Of course she was also especially picky when it came to the opposite sex, she needed someone who didn't just look and smell nice but that she had a connection with, shared disdain over the same things, the same level of contempt for things and a love of all magical creatures. She doubted she was ever going to find one of those.

With Quidditch still cancelled and zero desire to do any homework, Tulip had taken to the dorm room early, partly to hang out of the window for a quick smoke, (Flora had got her started over the summer break). She had discovered if she sat on the back of the chair with her head out the window and her wand casting a fresh breeze spell she could easily have a smoke without causing too many issues for herself and her dorm mates. She was rationing herself to one a day on days when someone annoyed her, which had been most days so far this week.

The dormitories are housed on either side of the tower. The rooms both up and down the left stairwell lead to the male dorms. Those both up and down the right stairwell lead to the female dorms. Each stairwell opens to a balcony overlooking the common room, and the stairs on the right immediately smooth into a slide the moment a boy steps onto them.

Each floor of the tower, four beneath the common room and four stretching above it, contains eight dormitories (one floor per year).

The rooms are of a decent size and shaped in a semi-circular fashion as they wrap around the tower.

All dorms are identical, save for the little touches of decor that are added throughout the term by the students. Each room contains 4 four-poster beds with curtains covering all sides. These curtains, like many others in the common room, sport the sigil of Gryffindor with its proud lion. At the foot of each bed is the student's school trunk, and to the right of each bed is a nightstand with a wicker lamp on top and a small opening that can house books below.

In the centre of each room is a large stove that keeps the space warm, especially against the bracing highland breezes in the winter. The heat is magically regulated, allowing for a cooler space during the warmer months.

Against the wall, opposite the beds, sit four chests of drawers used for containing the students' uniforms and everyday casual wear. They are charms to open only with a tap of the owner's wand.

There are wide windows along the walls, allowing in plenty of light and beautiful views of the school grounds.

Each floor of the tower contains two bathrooms, one to service the girls of that floor and the other for the boys. There are several showers (three at either end) and a row of stalls set separately. The wall housing the door also houses the sinks and mirrors.

It is most busy just after morning wake-up and about half an hour before curfew. Students wishing to avoid the morning rush, in particular, typically have to wake earlier or risk being late for lessons.

The stone floors are enchanted with a non-slip charm for the moments when the rooms are in highest use, when there may be puddles of water everywhere. The showers themselves are charmed to dry the moment the student steps out, preparing for the next student's entry.

Nestled behind the Fat Lady's portrait is the common room of the brave...and sometimes foolhardy. Up in Gryffindor Tower, this large, circular room features several squishy couches and armchairs, providing students with a comfortable space to unwind after a long day of classes. The seating is arranged around the large and magnificent fireplace that blazes continuously from the first day of a new term to its end. Atop the fireplace is a portrait of a lion; the visage of Gryffindor House.

A large, plush carpet in shades of deep and light crimson occupies most of the space closest to the fireplace, allowing room for those who prefer a more grounded experience and for days when all the chairs have run out. It's soft to the touch and surprisingly warm. If not careful, one could end up falling asleep right there.

The common room, as one would suspect, is decorated in the colours of this proud house. The curtains, the paint, and the upholstery all contain shades of scarlet and gold. Along the walls hang various tapestries, all depicting famous figures and incidents related to Godric Gryffindor. Some of them move, recounting the tales of the brave founder.

There is a noticeboard that sits just by the exit. It changes weekly, containing all the school events, club activities and assignments due. If you ever feel like you've fallen behind, it should be your first stop.

To one end of the common room are several tables fit for studying or playing any of the games stored on the shelf nearby. There are also many novels and a few educational books that can be found on the neighbouring bookshelf.

Spiral staircases lead both up and down, taking you toward the dormitories. Girls are housed on one side and boys on the other. The staircase to the girls' dormitory has been charmed to turn into a slide the moment a boy sets foot on it. At the top are a couple of balconies that wrap along portions of the common room wall, allowing a clear view below into the main area.
