As nighttime fell upon the carnival, rides, booths and stalls all lit up in brilliant colorful shimmers, cascading across the grounds with their own magic. The band picked up in energy as the dance floor filled with sugar-hyped students. The rides seemed just a little more thrilling, and the games just a little more difficult.

Everywhere one looked, students were coupling off, hands entwined as they took in the sights, sounds and smells. Everything sparkled. Everything shone. And yet, beneath the glow, something in the air had changed. Too still between the songs, too heavy beneath the laughter. The carnival goers had been sure that the night would taper off as peacefully and full of fun as the day had began.

They were wrong.

The padded gates of the creature paddock tore open, metal shrieking, ropes snapping, and a scatter of creatures burst into the midway. Sleek shadows, feathered shapes, a tumble of hooves and startled cries. Stalls emptied as students dove from the path; vendors and professors tried to herd the beasts back, and the crowd's gaze bent toward the commotion like moths to a flame. For an instant every head turned away from the center of the carnival.

It was the distraction the night needed.

The music didn't stop right away. It stumbled, and then faltered, the musicians sensing something sinister before anyone else did. The air changed, stiller than it had been just a few moments before, the colors of the carnival suddenly blending together before each person's eyes in a blinding smear.

A harsh wind suddenly exploded through the grounds, whipping the tops of the tents and sending snacks and prizes flying in every direction. A pulse of what seemed to be swirling black smoke burst through the midway, twisting through the lights as if drawn by the magic itself. It swallowed the laughter in an instant, devouring sound and sight and leaving only the screams of those who hadn’t been caught in it, before it vanished as quickly as it had appeared.

When the air cleared, a handful of students were...gone. No trail, no echo, only a faint ozone tang, and a voice that amplified across the grounds for everyone to hear.

"I have three." The voice rasped lowly, a slight giggle in the his inflection.

"All you've done has been in vain. All your efforts, all your 'triumphs'," another chuckle, "Only to realize we've been here all along."

Confusion would come over the crowd as they tried to understand what the voice meant, what he referred to.

"The Ministry will release Halloway within two hours. Deliver him to the Dark Tower. Ten minutes to acknowledge my demands. Otherwise what has been taken, will not be recognizable when you bury it."

Faint screams suddenly sounded from the Dark Tower, before fading out and leaving the carnival grounds in stunned silence.

What was the headmistress to do when everyone was laughing and having fun at the Carnival? Well, Ruby had been hesitant to leave the castle, however it was awfully quiet seeing as everyone was outside. So the woman made her way down to the event and took in the sights. The Prefects had done a fantastic job, and all the students looked extremely happy to be there.

The sight, honestly, brought a smile to the woman’s face.

She may as well see what everyone was doing. From a distance she could see the Deputy at the dunk tank, soaking wet from just being freshly dunked in the water. She laughed, and continued down the walkway, her eyes scanning the area to ensure everyone was having a great time. And, most importantly, be safe.

“What… is this…?” Ruby said softly under her breath as she approached the red and white tent. A familiar redhead sat at a table. Fortune Telling?

“Okay, Miss Nordstrom, I will bite,” she said and sat down.
There had been many times in his life where he wondered how he got there. In that moment, how the series of events led him to be in that very spot in that very moment. Fighting in the war. Holding a fallen soldier while they took their last breath. Sitting at the funeral of his wife. Getting punched in the face as a preteen during a fight behind the family shop.

And now this. How in the hell had he gotten to this exact spot at this exact moment.

Gideon had woken up and decided to forgo the more tailored suit, vest, shirt and jacket. No, today he was going casual. Basic grey pinstripe pants, white undershirt, over it a white dress shirt with the sleeves folded up to his elbows, suspenders and currently no shoes or socks. His tattoo on full display, unusual smile on his face and the occasional playful cat call at a student. This was not the Gideon most people saw. EVER.

Sitting on the hard wooden bench above the cool tank of water, yelling at the students that dare to dunk him in the dunk tank. Sure, some had gotten in a good shot, most missed by a mile, but all were having a blast.

“Come on! You can do better than that! My Granny can toss a ball better in her sleep!” He yelled at a fifth year Gryffindor who was laughing right along with him. The poor kid had tried three times, all missed. “Go practice, I’m sure you’ll do better next year!”

Adjusting himself on the seat, Gideon ran his fingers through his wet hair, pushing it off his face. He had unfortunately taken a few trips into the tank. Thoroughly soaked through, water dripping off the end of his hair, he had to admit, he was having way more fun than he would have ever thought. As the next person stepped up to the plate, he smiled.

“Look, I know it’s hard, but if you miss I promise not to tell anyone. Maybe. Never mind, I’ll pass out flyers. DO YOUR WORST!”

This might be the most exciting day she had ever had at the castle. Sure, the stairs shutting down was interesting and the Hospital Wing magical blow up had been crazy, but rides and animals, snacks, games AND a fortune teller. Yep, best day ever.

Everleigh had a smile on her face. An ACTUAL smile, and it wasn’t a fake one that her mother told her to plaster on while greeting friends. A rare sight indeed. Lemonade in one hand, fudge in the other, she skipped around the grounds looking at all the sites. There was a line at the fortune teller booth, so that would come later. She knew it was her cousin giving the fortunes and that they were FOR SURE fake. Tilly had zero seer ability, so it was hilarious to think what she was telling people.

The animals were fun, she would have to visit those soon, but they didn’t have the same pull as the rides. Filling up on yummy treats, then riding rides was probably not the smartest move for the young Ravenclaw, but… live and learn.

Walking through the rides area, Everleigh made mental notes on the rides she wanted to ride. After walking through the area, she decided on all of them. Letting loose, having fun, laughing and enjoying the fun was SO not like her. Usually the buttoned up, serious, academic type. Letting it all go to just be a kid was more difficult than it should be.

Finally deciding on the Tunnel of Curiosities, Everleigh waited in line for someone to join her. Hopefully there were a few more students ready for some fun!

Without question, Cassian had taken nose plugs before entering the puffskein pen. Call him what you'd like, but the boy preferred not having any of the creatures trying to stick their tongues up his nose for the grave crime of wanting to get a closer look at them. It had already happened to him once while completing a detention in the paddocks. It had been the most intrusive and unpleasant greeting he'd ever gotten from a creature. Just the memory was enough to make him shudder.
Generally, Cass wasn't the sort to hang around the paddocks and preferred to spend his time on stages rather than barns, but already at the carnival, there was no reason not to have a look for himself.

"Hey Ging," Benji said, dropping down on the cushioned stool across from his best friend, a lollipop stick hanging out the corner of his mouth. His eyes took in the strange decor, noting it looked quite similar to the Divination classroom except...more fun? Was that the word he was looking for?

Definitely darker in any case. The boy could barely see.
"You reading the cards with your fingers?" he asked, grinning from ear to ear wondering how in the world the girl was seeing anything, but maybe he just had poorer eyesight than she did. "I heard about that you know. Blind people are something. Read with their fingers. It'd be weird to be a wizard and blind, yeah? How would you know who or what you're casting at? Try to duel and turn someone into a rubbish bin lid."

He was rambling, as usual.

"Anyway," he said, sucking on the treat loudly. He pointed to the center card. "That one. Tell me all the good things, Ging. I'm not in the mood to be depressed."

"Hey Ging," Benji said, dropping down on the cushioned stool across from his best friend, a lollipop stick hanging out the corner of his mouth. His eyes took in the strange decor, noting it looked quite similar to the Divination classroom except...more fun? Was that the word he was looking for?
The Prefects spent weeks perfecting the carnival. Their work involved everything from making plans and handling staff logistics to creating menus, sourcing entertainment, and arguing over every minute detail. Put eight teenagers in a room and tell them to agree? They were lucky they came out alive. Despite the fierce interhouse fighting, the carnival was a true labor of love, and in the end, the results were spectacular.

Carnivals are inherently fun: games, rides, great food, friends, and an endless supply of delicious, unhealthy snacks. The sounds playing over the grounds were pure joy. Laughter, shouts and cheers from the games, screams from the rides, and the satisfying, intermittent splash of a professor hitting the water. It was the perfect cherry on top of a beautiful cake.

Positioned between the rides and games was quite possibly the best attraction at the carnival. A large Dunk Tank sat front and center, a small seat suspended perfectly over the waiting water. Beside the tank, a metal arm with a classic red and white bullseye beckoned students to take a shot. Much to their delight, the ones taking turns in the hot seat were the Professors and Staff from the castle. Who wouldn't jump at the chance to dunk their Herbology Professor or the Deputy Headmaster?

Music drifted across the grounds, creating a fun, festive atmosphere for the annual Spring Carnival. Laughter, cheers, and the splashes from the dunk tank mixed with the good natured groans of the now-drenched teachers, all adding to the lively ambiance. The rides drew quite a crowd, many students having never seen anything like them before.

The sights, sounds, and smells of the carnival assaulted the senses as you walked through the grounds. Savory treats and sugary snacks competed with the distinct smell of the animal petting zoo to create a sensory experience unlike any other. Not necessarily in a good way.. Students dashed between the booths, cotton candy in hand, playing games, riding the attractions, and simply enjoying the perfect spring day with their friends.

At the end of the line of stalls sat an unassuming tent draped in bold red and white stripes. A sign that read "Fortune Teller" led passersby to believe that a true Seer with powerful Divination skills waited inside.

Nothing could have been further from the truth.

Stepping inside, one found a small, red-haired fourth-year student seated at a table, ready to reveal the future. Unfortunately for all those that chose to participate, she had little to no real divination abilities, and she was definitely not a real fortune teller. That being said, she absolutely loved the look of the tarot cards and was determined to do her very best to decipher their mysterious clues.

Inside the tent, the space was dark, lit only by the soft glow of candles. The walls were draped with tapestries, and the floor held cushy chairs, soft linens, and pillows in varying shades of jewel tones, making it a cozy spot to supposedly find out one's future. As patrons entered the tent, they were greeted by a smiling Ginger and asked to take a seat and "pick a card, any card."

Smack dab in the center of the carnival, lies a fantasy land of every taste, texture and temptation imaginable; a roaring-twenties paradise for the gluttonous and the curious alike.

The air is thick with the glorious scents of joy itself, fried dough, burnt sugar, citrus, roasted meats and buttery delights, accompanied by the sounds of brass from a jazz band that refuses to play anything slower than a heartbeat. Tiny gilded bulbs float overhead, twinkling like fireflies, illuminating the long wooden tables and benches that await beneath them. Mason jars filled with house-colored liquids somehow glow on and off sporadically, making the entire area feel like a colorful dance hall.

Along the perimeter awaits various food stalls - all done up in art-deco filigree - their vendors shouting out orders above the music. One sells molten squares of chocolate that fizz on one's tongue before bursting into harmless, glittery fireworks.

Next to the fudge stall is the popcorn stand, where the kernels crackle into whatever flavor one is craving. Butter? Caramel? Dill pickle? Cheese? Roasted Lamb? The popcorn is your oyster.

Across the way, a rather excited vendor spins his waffles mid-air until the customer catches one on a plate - each delicious pastry containing its own unique charm. Perhaps yours will meow, or giggle when you stick your fork in it?

There's a stand dolling out large roasted turkey legs and ears of corn, all dripping with juice and sending up savory smoke that entices everyone that walks by. A lemonade stand offers giant tubs of the tart drink, filled with fresh fruits of every kind.

Finally, an ice cream tent serves up giant sprinkled cones topped with dozens of flavors to choose from, all enchanted with its own little snow cloud to ensure the treat won't melt before the consumer can fully enjoy it.

In the center of it all is a wide wooden dance floor, encouraging participants to come and show off their best moves to all of their friends. Maybe, if they're lucky, the band will finally decide on a slower tune; something soft enough for hand-holding and shy smiles instead of twirls and laughter.
Every year, your prefects are tasked with hosting an event that the entire school can enjoy. This year, with the help of their professors and more than a bit of magic, you can now enjoy the Carnival of 1921! On the unexpectedly mild afternoon of Saturday, March 12, a portion of the Hogwarts grounds has been commandeered for this very purpose.

An entire area of the grounds has been cordoned off and reserved for arguably the best area of the fair. Just by the food and rest area stands a large and magnificent arch, fitted with flashing illusory lights that shimmer in changing patterns.

Step right through and you'll be transported to a world of fun and games.

The music changes as you step through the arch, taking on an even more vibrant and upbeat tune. It's almost as if the music has been sped up to match the excitement that can only be found among gigantic rides and questionable carnival games. Confectionery Stalls litter the area, providing the typical fanfare for such an event. There are stalls for cotton candy, toffee apples, lemon drops, and magical sweets that change color or fizz. Should you be in need of a real meal, you'll have to return to the rest area outside.

The area is split into two sections: games and rides.

Near the front, several carnival games have been set up. Come enjoy a game of "Coconut Shy". Throw a ball and hit the coconuts off their stand. Be careful, they giggle and squirm, making them tricky devils. Perhaps the ring toss is more your speed. Collect the rings and try to land them on the moving pegs that seemed to be engaged in their own dance. Not a fan of those shoddy fortune tellers (sorry, Matilda)? Why not try the fortune fish? It's a simple game where you drop a coin (knuts only, we won't give you back any change), then receive a cryptic fortune that may or may not prevent you from sleeping for the next week. Do you know how much a bowtruckle weighs? How about a puffskein? Guess correctly and you could win a prize in our edition of "Guess the Weight".

Beside each of these games is a prize booth. If you're successful at these magical games, you can have your pick of:

Stuffed creatures (dragons, kneazles,)

Tin Toys (wind-up, enchanted figurines that walk, dance, or duel)

Glass marbles (swirling with illusions—each one shows a different scene when held to the light)

Miniature gramophones

Pressed flower keepsakes (preserved in glass with a charm to stay fresh)

Mood pendants

Whispering shells.

* Only one prize per game win.

Not much for games? Toward the back of the area, there are plenty of rides that might still scratch that itch for a good time. The swing boats are a good place to start. A pair of large boats loom, suspended on metal frames. They are magically activated and will not start moving until all passengers are seated and strapped in. Something about liabilities. Each boat seats eight. There is a mini carousel nearby. Granians, abraxans, and aethonan models of varying colours will be your steed. The chair-o-planes ride is not for those who've just eaten. Riders will be seated in chairs, and these will spin continually outward as the ride itself spins. On the outer bands of the games and rides area is a track that houses the "Hogwarts Mini Express". Seating up to 10 students, this train will take you on a tour of the festive grounds. Last, there is the Tunnel of Curiosities. This boat ride will take you through a tunnel full of magical illusions, funky mirrors, and many oddities. It's a world of wonder inside. Each boat seats only two, but there are several boats in operation.
