The day was warm for being a day in Scotland. There was also the matter of what constituted a warm day in Scotland, since the concept of warm and Scotland were oxymorons. The same could also be said for dry. Sure, the country had its periods where it went a few days or more without rain, but its return came with a vengeance.

Walking into the classroom, Castor and Pollux soared ahead of her, making a beeline for the chalkboard while her bag floated to its place beside the desk. Eris, as always, walked her proudly and unhurried beside her master. The castle had become all too familiar to the half-kneazle, exploring it whenever she got bored, picking out preferred spots to sit or nap.

The desks were there, though pushed back a little way, to make more room for the front. A demonstration of sorts was to be in order, and Etain would serve as such. Taking her mug of hot cocoa—a mug she seemed to take everywhere she went—the woman drank deeply from it and waited for class to begin.

Tuesday, 3 May 1921
8:00am

The morning had been rather ordinary when taking into account everything that had transpired in March; the Hospital Wing was running smoothly now and it seemed – so Rose thought – that everything that Thayer and the Runes professor had done to mess around with magic in the castle was finally back to a normal state. What a damn relief, too.

That is… until…

“Henry, just breathe, I assure you that you will be fine…” came a woman’s voice. Rose could hear someone on the verge of panicking. She stood and rushed to go see what was going on.

That was when she saw Thessaly Briar, the Herbology professor, accompanying a student. The boy was looking in horror at his hands, which were covered in full, red blisters that looked as if they were ready to pop at any moment. He was hyperventilating and whimpering.

“What on Earth happened?” Rose asked as she led the boy to one of the patient beds.

“Well, it seems as if someone has tampered with some of the plants in the greenhouse. He touched a plant that even I don’t recognize, and after getting some resin of some sort on his hands and arms, this happened shortly after.”

Rose looked at the boy’s face, and then called the volunteers over that were in the Wing.

“I tried to identify what the plant is, however it doesn’t look like any of mine. I don’t know how it got there, or even what it is. Miss Nordstrom is attempting to figure it out.”

“Hmm… okay,” Rose said as one of the blisters finally filled enough to cause it to burst.

She handed the boy a towel to hold on the pustule that had popped while she briefed everyone.

Rose moved the volunteers out of earshot of the boy while she informed them of what was going on. “It looks as if there is an unknown plant in the greenhouse that has caused blisters all over Henry’s hands and arms. We will need everyone’s help for this; Matilda is already in the greenhouse, so feel free to join her. We must find a cure for this, and we must also treat the symptoms.”

Rose looked at the small group of student volunteers.

“Please be sure to exercise caution as we do not know if the blisters, or the pus, is contagious. Keep the Wing clean to prevent spread. Please, try to be thorough so that we can try to help Henry out and prevent any more injuries.”
Your job is to go to the greenhouse and examine the plant that injured Henry. It is a hybrid of sorts, which the Herbology professor doesn’t even recognize. Matilda Nordstrom is trying to identify the plant.

Some notes:

The plant in question is a Snargaluff and Venomous Tentacula hybrid.

It looks like a Snargaluff, which is a gnarled stump with thorn-covered vines that can hit you when provoked. By itself, it is not dangerous. On the vines are green pulsating pods about the size of a grapefruit. Normally, the pods contain ingredients for potions.

Due to the Venomous Tentacula, when the pods are touched they burst and a green resin coats whatever touched it.

The Spellcaster's Club Room

You stand before the door to the club room as you've always done before a drill. This one is the final one for the term, the last chance to prove your competence to yourself and perhaps even your professor, who stands just by the entrance. Maddox suggests you keep a cool head throughout, reminding you that you've all already had plenty of practice and have already survived the previous pair of drills.

Whether this boosts your confidence or not, it is your turn next.

As you enter, the door slowly creaks shut behind you. There's no going back now, only forward. The only problem with forward is that it is actively hostile toward your goals. No sooner than when the door closes, you find yourself under immediate attack. Bolts of electricity are hurled at you in rapid succession. They are unrelenting, one or two managing to zap you as if to assure you that they are real and need to be stopped. They are a painful reminder of what's at stake and encouragement not to get struck again.

On the other side of the room, you spot the culprit. It's a training dummy with an imitation wand that keeps sending lightning. Imitation or not, they certainly feel real, and it's abundantly clear that that little magic stick is the source of your discontent.

Trying to cast at it will reveal a shield charm in place. Curiously, it cracks before mending, as if it is being renewed. All the while, the attack continues. You'll have to find a way to get through the shield in order to get to what you want while trying not to get yourself electrocuted in the process.

Whatever you do will require great...force. Any force substantial enough.

Fallen debris is scattered all around the room, some big enough to hide behind...or to make use of in other ways.

In a minute, it will become clear where they came from. The entire room begins to shake, and a low rumble can be heard from the ceiling. All that lightning isn't good for the environment, as it actively compromises the structural integrity of the room. It appears the next bit is preparing to collapse, and it will in a few minutes. Either get through the drill in time or be prepared to handle the chunks of debris as they begin to fall.

Good luck!

Things had been difficult lately. Tilly was sad… A lot. After the events of the tower, Everleigh being taken and tortured, it was hard for Tilly to get motivated to do much of anything. Add to that, Ren being gone and she was in a full weepy depression.

Her grades had suffered the most in her current state. She hated going to classes, sometimes skipping all together. Her normal spunky extrovert self was turning in, becoming a sad and lonely introvert. She missed her cousin and her boyfriend. Ex-boyfriend? Ugh, she didn’t even know what to call him.

When Ren left for Japan just after Christmas they parted on good term. Of course she still loved him, that would never change. Although, a long distance relationship at their age was impractical. So they were taking “a break.” If he came back… no, when he came back, if they they still had feeling for each other, they would revisit the relationship. In the moment it made sense. Now it just made her sad.

Tilly also missed her cousin. Everleigh hadn’t been the same since coming back from Easter break. Sher was quiet, withdrawn, spacy and quick to emotions. Ever was not the type to cry at the drop of a hat, until now. It was hard to watch, but she loved her cousin and would be there for anything she needed.

Today was a necessary evil. She had missed a drill and wasn’t the best at taking notes, so a practice session for Spellcasters was a must.

Tilly sat on the floor of the practice room waiting for Alice to arrive. Laying on her back, knees bent, her red hair splayed around her head in a red halo. She really had no desire to be there, but hopefully it wouldn’t be to painful.

Julia led the way through the tree line, the cloak of her hood pulled up over her head and a candle in her hand. The forest greeted them with a soft, gentle silence - a far cry from the howls, snaps and shuffles that normally rang through the trees. It pressed in form all sides, carrying the scent of moss and damp bark while the warm night air breezed around them.

"Mind your step," Julia's voice drifted back to her students who followed closely behind. "The forest is always watching and listening." Reverence and respect was due not only to the forest itself, but to all those who resided within it - creatures and spirits alike.

Each student had been prepared for this night. Over the course of term, Julia had slowly built them up to the idea of what a true blood ritual would look like, entail and how it pertained to their daily lives. Each of them wore their cloaks, each of them a slow-burning tapered candle in their hands.

The further they ventured, the more it felt like the world behind them had fallen away entirely. No castle lights. No curfew bells. Just the rhythmic crunch of boots against soil and the flicker of candles weaving small orbs of light.

As they came upon a clearing, the students would see a broad sigil had been marked into the soil in chalk and salt, curling around a low stone basin.

"When wizards and witches in the old traditions sought strength, they didn't always look upward. They looked down, to the soil, to Mother Earth herself." She looked at each of them, noticing a bit of nerves in an expression here or there. "You've learned what it means for blood to bind, and now you'll learn what it means for blood to awaken."

She stooped down, taking a handful of soil into her hand and running it along her palm and fingers. "Beneath your feet runs a ley line. A current of power that stretches across the land, older than Scotland itself. The Druids and early Celts believed these energies were manifestations of the gods, or of the Earth's spirit. Their temples and ritual sites were often built along these lines to align with solstices and moon cycles. Wizards who know how to listen can feel them, humming beneath the ground." Standing again, she brushed the soil from her hands. "It's believed that ley lines are where your magic is most powerful. It's why ancient magical families built their estates where they did. Why battles were fought on certain fields."

She wandered through the circle a bit, giving her students a chance to take it all in. “Magic is not just in your wand or your spellbooks. It is in the earth, in your blood, in the very spaces where life and history converge. This lesson, is about learning to hear that current, to understand how our power is strengthened when we acknowledge the cycles of giving and receiving.” She paused a moment, deciding whether her students were ready for the next challenge she'd put to them, but after everything that had happened after the carnival, it was time for them to start thinking for themselves.

"The Ministry fears these rites because they cannot be owned or contained. They are yours, solely and for no one else. Once you drain your magic into the soil, it becomes part of the world itself, and while humans forget, the world never does."

She set her candle down on the edge of the basin, indicating for each of them to do the same. "Questions before we begin?"

*OOC: Last class of the term! Look at us.

Pretty straightforward. Julia has led all of your children out to the forest to be sacrificed to Odin in hopes of a good harvest.

Kidding. You'll all follow her into the clearing. There's a low stone basin (think a fire pit without the fire) and in the ground there's been sigils written in chalk and salt. You'll listen to her lecture, place your candle and ask any questions you may have. How does your kiddo feel about the Ministry following the events of the carnival? Are they more open to hearing Julia's criticisms? Are they less so? How do they feel about the idea of blood sacrifices and leywork? Or about the history of battles, temples and castles being placed along the ley lines?
Next update (with the starting practical) will be on 11/7.
