She was sure she had heard it! Just a moment ago, deep and long, howling through the cloudless night. It had torn her from sleep, eyes wide and heart pounding, the rush of adrenaline immediately wiping every ounce of sleep from her body.

The echoes of it still rang in her head as she stared into the dark, unmoving and breathless. All the other girls were asleep but Maevie was straining her ears, afraid to make a move or sound lest she missed it.

And there it was again.

Excited fright pushed the blood through her veins with urgency as she sat up in one brisk movement, gaze towards the window hidden away by curtains. Only a sliver of moonlight fell through the small crack in the middle, pooling on the wooden floor.

Maevie didn't think, only moved, guided by curiosity and the thrill for the dangerous, reckless. Silently, her feet slid into her boots, the laces tied carelessly, stuffed into the sides. She left her pyjamas on, threw her bathrobe over and then she left the girls' dormitory on silent feet.

Softly, the door clicked shut and Maevie halted.

She wasn't supposed to go out alone, least of all at night. Least of all in search for something that could maul a girl like her to shreds in a blink of an eye. She had promised her mum.

But still...

Guilt ate away her conscience as she stood there in the hallway, suspended in time, trying to decide. Trying to find a loophole, the grey area, a way to slip through the gaps. She shouldn't, she had promised.

And yet...

Maevie chewed on her lip for only a second longer and then she turned. Not back to her bed like deep down she knew she should. But instead towards the dormitories' exit, then with swift strides through the cool night -- her pulse a vicious drum in her chest -- into the Grand Lodge.

Relief flooded through her when the door shut behind, closing out the night. No reason to stop though.

Someone must still be awake. Someone she could ask to go with her. Like she had promised her mother -- never alone.

A wide smile spread on her face when she saw him, lounged on one of the couches, snacks in hand.

"Benji!", she called excitedly, bounding over, all guilt forgotten. The sofa creaked merrily a she jumped up next to him, landing on her knees, hands shaking him by the shoulder. "Benji, you need to come outside with me! There's a werewolf somewhere!" She stopped her shaking, leaning in with an almost frantic glint in her eyes and she added, voice lower, "I heard it howling twice!"

Summer didn’t look the same this time around. In years past there had been vacations to exotic locations, time spent in Sweden with her friends and possibly a short stint at camp. This year, there were no vacations. There were no friends coming to the family estate. And camp, she would be there all summer.

Was she angry? Not really, but she was bored out of her mind.

What made this summer borderline unmanageable, no Ren? No boyfriend at all in fact, which made her the proverbial third wheel in all social situations. Not that Benji and Rae were together… or were they? Tilly wasn’t sure to be honest. Granted, even if they weren’t together they were still together. It was a whole thing.

It was late, they should be back in their dorms, but where was the fun in that. She had her canvas messenger bag, snacks busting out of the top, as always. Just waiting for Rae and Benji to make their appearance. There wasn’t any big declaration or secret to discuss. No monumental revelation or sad sob story. She could get into her scar issues, but she honestly didn’t want to deal with that right now.

Nope. This was a simple hangout session with her friends. It wouldn’t be the same without Ren, but his absence was another reason she wanted her friends close. She missed him, but knew he was where he was supposed to be.
She heard the footsteps before she saw the faces. “It’s about fucking time.
Maevie had spent two weeks at St. Mungo's and the rest of term at home.

Even if she had wanted to go back, her mum wouldn't have let her. Not after what had happened.

It still sat deep and anxiously within her heart, the memories of the carnival turned torture. Like a sticky, inky weight attached to her insides like tar that simply wouldn't scrub off. She still woke sometimes, sweaty and panting and frantic, the scars on her hand throbbing with a phantom pain, Rae's twitching body flashing behind her eyes, Ever's screams echoing inside her skull.

But it had gotten better over time. It only happened about once a week now.

Logically, Maevie should have turned her back on Hogwarts and the strangeness that was its magical world. Where a school had been infiltrated but never properly smoked out, where she had been awed stupid and then violently rattled awake.

Where a colourful dream had been twisted into some nightmarish horror story.

But she had begged and begged, for months and months because somehow she couldn't let go of it despite everything. Despite the violent push into reality and out of a child's wonderland -- bubble plopped -- Maevie needed to go back.

Eventually her mother had relented, by virtue of her brother's help. Begrudgingly and with noticeable reluctance but eventually even she hadn't stood a chance against her daughter's insistence anymore.

Maevie understood. Why her mother preferred her going back to muggle school. But she had promised to be careful, to write every week, to never go anywhere too late or alone, to keep an eye out and that Rosie would take care of her. Rosie didn't know that but that was beside the point.

And now she was back.

Her suitcase sat on one of the bottom bunk beds, opened and half-emptied. Clothes lay strewn across the sheets, seemingly with no order, trinkets scattered about haphazardly. The letter to Rosie was mindfully put away in her nightstand's drawer, for later. She'd have to go find her.

But first she had to get order into this chaos. Maevie bent over half the bed to reach a skirt that had somehow landed back there, not hearing the footsteps approaching from behind.

As promised, there had been chaos. There were books chasing people, shelves rattling. Whatever calm had once existed had been utterly erased. In its place were screams and toppled furniture while wards of the camp tried everything they could to get away.
It was a sight for sure, but not one she personally cared to be involved with...until she was reminded that, as a facility volunteer, she was the only one present with a wand and an obligation. June had been absolute shit.
It seemed a recurring theme. Every summer, Benji somehow stumbled into a new way to have his head screwed with, and here he was, trying to play the part of normal. The Hufflepuff wasn't about to unpack the nitty gritty in the middle the feast hall - mostly because he'd rather swallow his wand whole. Instead, he did what he always did when things got too hard to face. He smirked. He joked. He teased. He leaned back in his chair like he hadn’t spent the last three weeks oscillating between wanting to punch a wall and wanting to sleep for twelve years.

If anyone asked, he was grand. Lovely. Peachy. A national treasure, as always.

He poked at his mashed potatoes, stirring them lightly with his fork as hazel eyes slowly raised to the person sitting across from him. There was a devilish gleam behind them, one anyone who knew Benji would recognize as him being up to no good.

His knee bounced underneath the table, energy sparking through him.

Benji smiled to himself, keeping his eyes trained on the person across from him. He lifted the spoon, heavy with mash, tilting it back and forth as though he were weighing his options. Maybe it was juvenile for a boy of fifteen. Maybe it was stupid.

But since when did Benji care about being stupid?

Everyone needed a little fun sometimes, right? A little distraction?

He certainly did.

The boy flicked his wrist, sending the mashed potatoes flying across the table in glorious form. It had been too long since he'd played Quidditch, but his aiming skills were still top notch, splatting against his seatmate's forehead.

The boy grinned wider as their eyes locked, a challenge of sorts. He waited, almost like a cat ready to pounce as his spoon hovered over his mushy peas. "Oh no mate," he quipped, his grin never faltering. "Who would do such a thing?"
"What do you think they really are, Echo?"

Rae crouched by the water line, dark eyes trained on the girl who looked back at her. Similar, but different. Much like the lake back at Hogwarts, Mirrorveil Lake was one of her favourite places to be whenever she happened to be at the facility. Prone to wandering as she was, the girl had always enjoyed her midnight strolls along the glassy black waters that so perfectly reflected the sky. There was a sense of peace to be found where the cool breeze flowed inland. In summer, the frogs and crickets added to the sleepy symphony of the night, transporting her to a different world. Less crowded, less loud and dripping with danger.

Without the incessant chatter of others, Rae was often left with her own thoughts. Her own thoughts and the night that stretched until morning.

That night, she let herself be fascinated by her horror-stricken reflection. When the expressions grew particularly frightful, the girl spared cautious looks over her shoulder to be sure her complacency wouldn't become her downfall. It only took one time with her guard lowered for a serene night to become something more, and while Rae had learned that the lake was keen to twist reality, she wasn't willing to let that become the reason she was carted off into the darkness by whatever unseen but ominous being that provoked her reflection so tremendously.

"Echo?" she called again.

Somewhere not far off, her feline companion was having her own adventure. While the half-kneazle didn't care much for Rae's fascination with the large body of water, she did enjoy checking along the reeds and shrubbery in case there should be something she could chase.

The Slytherin girl huffed, not at all appreciating the way the feline went on as if she weren't there. "Ignore me then. You used to love the--"

Her words were cut short when Echo bristled. The creature whirled around, sprinting to Rae's side despite her disdain for the wet sand and the gently lapping waves that reached out to her. A second later, the girl thought she knew what had set her off. Footsteps. Heading their way. Even without a watch, Rae knew it was already past the latest block of curfew. The girl froze, praying it wasn't the director out for his own checks as he was sometimes wont to do. The man cared an awful lot more about the rules than the professors back at Hogwarts did, and so soon into the summer, she wasn't looking to lose her privileges.

Mercifully, as the figure drew closer, Rae saw it was too short to be Montreaux. Much less concerning. Even better, she recognised the not-so-stranger.

"Hey, Eamon," she greeted, returning her gaze to the water. "Not interested in sleep either?"
