1st September, 1920

Dear Father,

I hope this letter finds you well. The journey back to school was uneventful, though noticeably quieter than previous years as many families chose not to return after last term's events.

The welcome feast was rather disappointing. Due to problems with the castle's kitchens, we were served sandwiches rather than a proper meal. the new Ministry-appointed Headmistress Haswell announced that both Quidditch and duelling would be cancelled for the year. Though, I suppose that this achieves your goal of ensuring I spend less time on my "flying around aimlessly" and more on my studies.

The Headmistress also mentioned some rather concerning issues with the castle itself. Apparently there have been problems with staircases becoming stuck for days, doors randomly transporting people to different rooms, and other magical malfunctions. She said these stem from the damage Halloway did to the protective enchantments, and advised us to keep our wands ready at all times. It will be a relief to not have to worry about the machinations of that madman or his accomplices.

There have been significant changes to the staff. We have a new Head of House, Professor Roan, who seems competent and direct. Our old one, quite rightly, has been shipped off to Azkaban where he no doubt belongs. We have a new class this term, with Professor Laurence taking on Dark Arts. The Laurence name is familiar of course, though do you know anything of her background or credentials in the subject?

Ruth Elliot was named as a Slytherin prefect, though given her performance at the welcome feast, that seems to have been an error on the administrations part. The House feels different with so many missing families. Those of us who did return seem to be taking things rather more seriously than before. Let us hope the new staff are up to the task.

Classes begin properly tomorrow. I remain cautiously optimistic, though I confess the bar has been set quite low.

Your dutiful son,
