Mr Nordstrom,

I am writing with an update on your granddaughter, Everleigh. As you know, progress has stalled for quite some time now, with no improvement in her ability to focus or to reconnect the fragments of her memories. Her mind still behaves in unpredictable, erratic patterns that make it impossible for both my aunt and me to find the root of this breakdown. Though I have managed to witness her full memory of the Dark Tower incident from March 1921, it hasn’t revealed any new leverage points to work with.

Nevertheless, the fragments her mind seeks out all seem to share a common denominator. They all revolve around feelings of fear, terror, and panic, and more often than not, those feelings appear stronger every time her father is in any way part of those mentioned fragments.

Given the ongoing investigation into allegations of child neglect and endangerment and your ignorance of the possible causes of Everleigh's condition from our initial meeting, I felt it appropriate to get in touch with her sister Alice and request a meeting in hopes of receiving a clearer picture. Judging by the fact that it was you who brought my aunt and me into the picture of Everleigh’s healing journey, I will assume the information I am going to share will stay between us.

Alice told me of a specific event involving her sister and Mr Ravenstone, in which he attempted to put a memory-altering charm on Everleigh but was stopped by Alice before he could finish. She furthermore voiced the concern that this might not have been the first time, and that both sisters have been subjected to tea infusions containing mind-altering properties.

Now, I am aware that these are serious allegations and are based on no more than Alice’s word and my instinct, but I feel the need to inform you that I believe Mr Ravenstone’s interference with Everleigh’s brain — potentially over the course of multiple years — may be the cause of his daughter’s declining mental health.

Again, I ask you for discretion and hope to hear your input on my thoughts.

Sincerely,

Dearest Dragomir,

I blame you for this. As is our usual dynamic. My Grandmother has become unbearable. Hence, the scratches at the top of the page. Apparently nicknames are unbecoming of a lady. Thankfully she has been called away, so I can write what I want now.

She is over the moon about our "marriage." Yes, she actually used air quotes. This might be partially my fault, since every time she calls you my fiancé I remind her there has been no proposal and no ring, so she's not allowed to say such things. It has become a point of contention, and she hates having to clarify to the sales staff, so now she just chuckles and goes on spending my grandfather's money.

I think I've been fitted for enough dresses to clothe half of Paris. Apparently I need evening gowns, afternoon dresses, walking dresses, luncheon dresses, tea dresses, garden party dresses, and at least three hats that cost more than my entire Hogwarts wardrobe. I asked whether anyone really needed that many hats and was told that the question itself was "deeply provincial." I don't entirely know what that means, but I'm pretty sure it wasn't a compliment.

We've spent almost every afternoon being paraded through drawing rooms, attending teas and luncheons with women who discuss marriages, charities, flower arrangements, the weather, and who was or wasn't invited to whichever gala happened last Thursday. I've been forced to smile so much that my cheeks have begun to ache.

And just when I thought it couldn’t get any worse, I was told this morning that for the next three weeks I will be participating in an intensive etiquette training.

She conveniently made it sound like a prestigious honor. I'm pretty sure it's actually a punishment.

Three weeks of learning how to host dinners, entertain guests, write invitations, remember who outranks whom, and somehow hold an interesting conversation without ever saying anything particularly interesting.

Honestly, it sounds exhausting.

I'm trying to think positively. Truthfully, I know these are things I'll need one day. I suppose I'd rather learn it now than embarrass myself later, but that doesn't mean I have to enjoy it.

And I’ve been informed that there will be no boots. High heels only. My toes already hurt.

Again, I’m pretty sure this is all your fault.

I miss you........

There. I admitted it.

No one here argues with me over Russian vocabulary, tells me I'm already crazy, or mysteriously appears wherever I happen to be hiding. Paris is beautiful, but it is considerably less interesting when there isn't an annoyingly persistent Russian wandering into my day. I keep expecting you to appear out of nowhere. You've become so good at finding me, that it almost feels strange when you don't

Tell me everything going on with you, as long as it doesn’t involve what types of fabric are acceptable for specific occasions.
What does your father have you doing? I hope for your sake that it’s more exciting than doily placement and acceptable hem lengths.

I suspect it is.

Yours,
Matilda

P.S. My scar has been the topic of discussion at every appointment. Finally, much to my grandmother's happiness, she was able to commission stockings that are magicked to hide the scar completely. I guess it’s for the best.

Hey Love,

Have you gotten all settled in at home? How's your dad doing? Full of questions for you as ever?

Mum and Daddy decided not to stay in London this summer. Mum's reasoning was that it was too easy for me to try and sneak out and I guess they don't really trust me not to. It's actually all I've been hearing whenever I ask anyone if I'm allowed to do something outside these walls. I wasn't even allowed to go shopping with Julia the other day. I guess the charm isn't enough reassurance for them that I won't make some grand escape.

Oh well. Only three months of this, right?

Rae arrived here yesterday to visit with Benji. They seem to be having a nice time. And...his little sister is here. She was supposed to have been adopted by another family, but Julia just showed up with her a couple Sundays ago, I guess. I haven't really asked any questions.

Have you met up with Freddie or your theatre group yet? Tell me everything. I'm dying for any and all entertainment. There's only so many wanders around the castle I can stand.
