With the first Hogsmeade weekend of the term came the grand debut of Butterwand & Co.’s newest line of confectionery, and Hogwarts students wasted little time indulging. The sweets spread through the castle at astonishing speed.
The effects were immediate and impossible to ignore, though at first, few connected them to the sweets themselves. Students became louder, bolder, more emotional, more excitable. Small disagreements became theatrical arguments, whispered crushes became accidental confessions, and ordinary afternoons turned unexpectedly chaotic.
Still, the candy remained wildly popular.
As personal stashes began to dwindle, students turned to owl orders, eager to refill hidden reserves and keep their pockets lined with Butterwand & Co.’s irresistible creations!

Butterwand & Co. had dramatically increased stock levels in anticipation of overwhelming demand. Mail orders were coming in daily, packages being sent to the castle by owls in droves.
Shelves emptied almost as quickly as they were replenished, and rumors spread through the village that Butterwand & Co. was booming with business. .
Back at Hogwarts, the pattern had become impossible for staff to ignore.
Emotional outbursts, impulsive behavior, dramatic social confrontations, bursts of overconfidence, and mysteriously chaotic classroom energy all seemed to trace back to one common denominator: candy.
Professors began exchanging concerned looks. Prefects whispered suspicions. Quiet conversations behind closed doors raised a pressing question:

By the second Hogsmeade weekend in early December, students had saved their pocket money, sent letters home for Christmas money early, pooled their funds and ran to the candy shop the minute the gates opened.
Students flooded the little candy shop, leaving with bags, boxes, and bulging coat pockets stuffed to the brim with sweets. The new influx of inventory into the castle caused a large scale emotional breakdown throughout the castle.
By mid December matter had escalated enough for the Headmaster to intervene.
An official announcement was issued: all confectionery from Butterwand & Co. was banned from Hogwarts grounds effective immediately. The response from students was swift, dramatic, and entirely predictable.
Care packages became suspiciously common. Owl deliveries arrived in plain wrapping and unmarked parcels. Boxes entering the castle were searched, suspicious packages confiscated.
Yet confiscation only seemed to sharpen student ingenuity.
Hidden compartments appeared in trunks. False-bottomed book bags emerged. Coat linings became mysteriously bulky. Sweet stashes vanished into places no professor would reasonably think to search.
Meanwhile, whispers of something more organized began to circulate. A small group of students had begun meeting in private, quietly conspiring to keep Butterwand & Co. sweets flowing into the castle. Trades were made in hushed corners of common rooms. Favours were exchanged. Prices rose. Before long, an unofficial black market emerged.

The Christmas holiday was a turning point in the candy business. Many students returned to Hogwarts with fresh stockpiles hidden among their luggage, convinced they had finally outsmarted the staff. For a brief time, there was an influx of outbursts and emotional behavior.
When the personal stashes dwindled, the blackmarket operation gained traction. The group became organized, secret meeting places were established, and trusted students quietly supplied the castle.
The success was short-lived.
After months of observing the strange behavior around the school, the professors finally connected the emotional outbursts, impulsive decisions, and classroom disruptions to Butterwand & Co.'s newest sweets. Staff launched a coordinated crackdown. Surprise inspections became commonplace, dorms were searched without warning, and known hiding places were emptied almost daily.
By mid-January, hundreds of pieces of candy had been confiscated. Students caught smuggling or distributing sweets found themselves serving detention under Professor Blackwood, where they were required to catalogue and destroy the growing mountain of contraband.

The black market adapted.
Student’s personal stashes became non-existent.
The students responsible for the black market worked quietly to hide small caches of candy around the castle, moving them frequently. Never using the same spot twice. Distribution became quieter, more selective, and more organized. New students to the trade found it nearly impossible to buy candy without being vouched for by someone already inside the network, while students in charge quietly adjusted prices to account for the increasing risk.
The professors responded in kind.
Searches became more targeted, suspicious students were watched more closely, and patrols increased around known meeting places. Despite these efforts, the flow of candy never completely stopped. Every successful confiscation seemed to be replaced by another hidden stash only days later.

Away from the students and the growing black market, the professors quietly partnered with Butterwand & Co. to investigate the cause of the confectionery's unexpected side effects. Every ingredient, supplier, and production charm came under review as they searched for the source of the problem. Whether it was a contaminated ingredient, a magical mishap, or deliberate tampering was still unknown, but one thing was certain: until the cause was found, the ban would remain firmly in place.
The black market group was prospering. Prices quietly climbed as availability dwindled, making the remaining candy worth more than ever. Small trades replaced bulk sales, and students became more selective about who they trusted.
At the same time, the castle began to settle down. As students' pocket money stopped flowing, parents cut off the money supply after many letters home. Without constant access to the sweets, the emotional swings became less frequent. Classrooms grew quieter, less arguments sprouted in the corridors, and the professors finally found themselves spending more time teaching.
The Hospital Wing saw a steady stream of students complaining of unusual issues. Restlessness, irritability, difficulty concentrating, mood swings, and the feeling that something was "off" became common complaints. None of the symptoms were dangerous, but the staff quickly realized they were from prolonged exposure to the enchanted sweets. Students were encouraged to rest, stay hydrated, and resist the urge to seek out "just one more" piece of candy.
The black market still existed, but it no longer felt unstoppable. The staff were slowly winning the war.
