Department of Magical Transportation

In a world of magic, it's hard to imagine that witches and wizards would be constrained by such mundane matters as how they'll move from point A to point B. Yet, even the most potent magic has its limits, and not everything is without risk. So how do our characters get around, and what options remain at their disposal?

The following is a breakdown of approved (with safety and practical restrictions in mind) methods of transporting wizards from one place to the next. You will find that, with distance, magic becomes less and less a reliable means as the peril at such distances increases.

Short Distances
(Same Town / Same City/ A City or Town Over)

Apparition

At the end of a student's sixth year at Hogwarts, they are permitted to take the apparition exam hosted within Hogwarts castle in order to gain an apparition licence. With this licence, witches and wizards are able to apparate from place to place, covering distances in seconds. When done right and within safe distances, it is the most convenient form of travel.

This is the best option to cover a few or so miles comfortably. When distance permits, it sometimes becomes possible to apparate into the adjoining city/town, depending on overall proximity. Apparition requires visual familiarity with the target destination and strong concentration.

This mode of transportation is riskier at longer distances (cross region, cross country, cross continent). Canonically, it has been established that great distances – especially across large bodies of water – are not done using apparition. This is because of the related risks, most commonly severe splinching and death. Additionally, due to international restrictions, even when the distance is within the capabilities of apparition, a witch or wizard is not permitted to apparate across country borders and must go through the proper ports of entry.

This is non-negotiable, and those found in breach of this statute will be punished to the fullest extent of the law.

Broom Flight

Brooms aren't only meant for Quidditch. At short enough distances, these transportation devices can get you where you want to go. Brooms are often used for daily commutes (typically within the same city), quick errands, etc. They are a slower option than apparition and become impractical during severe weather but are perfectly acceptable on days with clear skies or enough visibility.

There are height restrictions for flight to avoid unfortunate run-ins with other forms of air traffic and avians. There are also firm restrictions in place regarding where persons are permitted to fly in keeping with the Magical Statute of Secrecy. This excludes most predominantly or overwhelmingly Muggle areas. Those in more rural areas find they have fewer restrictions with the use of their brooms than those in the bustling cities.

As with apparition, you are not permitted to cross borders without proper authorisation.

One should be careful when routinely taking brooms on longer travel (typically intercity), as brooms are prone to general wear and tear caused by such trips. As a rule, the more often one flies and the further the distance, the more often they will need to bring their broom in for repairs and perform maintenance tasks.

This can become costly over time; however, failure to maintain one's broom may lead to sudden failures mid-flight. Healers also warn that prolonged broom use can lead to joint and back issues, though these are most common in cases of excessive broom use.

For anyone desirous of their own Floo, they must first come in to be registered with the Department of Magical Transportation. All Floo networks, both public and private, can be, and often are, monitored to ensure strict compliance with usage. This doesn't mean that the ministry is watching your every move, but that - if needed - they can, once you've decided to make use of the network.
This is a fast, safe means of travelling, and many popular destinations are already equipped with a Floo Station. It was created as a means of helping the underage and infirm get to where they're going in a safe and timely manner. This method needs no introduction. Whether it's the mundane rails that take you across the country (across Europe) or the Hogwarts Express that transports students to and from Hogwarts, trains are an essential part of Muggle and wizarding transport.

Like the Knight Bus and the Floo Network, these vehicles can get you to set stops, depending on the infrastructure available. Unlike the former two, it can also take you across Europe. Transportation is often dependable and comfortable, if not a bit slow, and is a staple even among many wizarding families. Trains become especially useful the longer the distance you intend to travel; however, they are limited by their stations and require documentation when crossing borders.
Trains have long since been considered 'the sensible choice' for their low risk/requirements, comfort and affordability.
Whether for a drive around the town, or longer trips out into the countryside, the world opens up to those in possession of these vehicles. These vehicles do not need to be registered with the ministry, though they must be registered with Muggle authorities.
It will take decades more for this to change, forcing all who wish to make such long trips to brave the waters in one of many liners.

When creating this magical economy, a few things were taken into consideration, such as adjustments needed for the inflation of the British Pound, making it more in line with the value of the 1920s (over time this will be adjusted with the changing times), as well as a more realistic conversation rate between galleons and pounds/dollars.
As well as the breakdowns that can be found in both the Ministry of Magic and St. Mungo's Hospital For Magical Maladies And Injuries, here is a more general salary guide to give you an idea of what your character would be earning and their standard of living within the wizarding world. The lists below are by no means exhaustive, and are only base salaries that do not take into account any bonuses earned through your characters' diligent work in their careers.

In the wizarding world of Knockturn Bound, we would like money to matter. As a means of world-building and crafting a system that better helps you to understand your character’s class and standing, the currency exchange has been created. This is the official governance of money on this site and is to be used only for reference purposes rather than any real legal tender. This is not meant to cause OOC divides or contention, it is simply another layer stacked onto our RPG that you can play around with and explore for your character.
This reference guide bears no relation to the OOC Gringotts Vault system and is for IC purposes only.
The guide intends to explain how galleons, sickles and knuts work on our site and how they connect to muggle money, jobs, and everyday life during this time period.
Please note, all money has been adjusted for inflation to be more accurate to the setting of the 1920s.
